What is Perfect Pitch?

Producer Andy Barnes and Upstairs at the Gatehouse have teamed up to present a fantastic array of new musicals - all created by UK based artists.

The event, which is likely to become an annual fixture in the musical calendar, has found 12 new musicals at varying stages of development, that are ready to have an outing in front of both the general public and an audience of industry practitioners who may be interested in their future development.

Andy Barnes said, “MTM:UK, Ovation and I have decided to stage this event because of the number of directors, writers and emerging producers who have musicals in development, or fascinating ideas of how they would like to interpret a new musical. Upstairs at the Gatehouse has offered the space so there’s a chance to get local people to give their opinions and encouragement for new work.”

Chris Grady of MTM:UK described the opportunity as “a feeding frenzy for new work and ideas - I hope some of the energy and unpredictability of a packed programme will provide a stepping-stone for future musicals.”

One of the musicals will be selected for a three-week workshop at the Hackney Empire in 2007.

About the Shows:

Departure Lounge

Four lads return from the summer holiday of their lives to find themselves with an hours delay in Malaga Airport Departure Lounge.

Ibiza Uncovered meets The Wonder Years as they discover what it’s like to be eighteen, British and despised by the rest of Europe.

With Brit-pop style acoustic guitar music, Departure Lounge is written by Dougal Irvine and features Dream Team’s Nina Muschallik as ‘Sophie’.  [Back to schedule]

Enchanted

An evil enchantress, a missing soap opera star, a disembodied head and a fairy tale fanatic welcome you to Enchanted The Musical.

Mixing equal parts of lunacy and dry wit, whilst blending decades of musical theatre traditions with sitcom humour, Enchanted offers an evening

spent in two parallel dimensions – a world of sorcery and enchantment next to a world of science and logic. Prepare to see this world through different eyes. [Back to schedule]

Eureka High

When Brendan Bragwell, Petersford High’s brightest student loses the plans for his revolutionary time gate, the very fabric of time itself is threatened.

Who is the enigmatix Archibald Ferdinand III who knows things about Brendan that defy reason? How is arch rival Phoebe Rivers involved?

And will Brendan marry cheerleader Susan Strothers or will destiny be thwarted? A great family musical starring many West-End performers. [Back to schedule]

Heavens Above

Ever wondered what trolley dollies do when the curtains are closed? Blasting from the skies comes the supersonic new musical “Heavens Above”,

written by Niall Palmer and Rob Bedford and co-directed by Richard Bennison and Paul Emelion (When Harry Met Barry).

Featuring a stellar cast of West-End performers, it’s all aboard Empyreal Airlines flight EA24 in a glittering tribute to the heyday of gorgeous, glamorous air-travel.

It’s bitchy! It’s chic! And what with the captain’s dicky ticker and the smoke pouring from the galley, it’s about to all go fabulously wrong! [Back to schedule]

Once Upon A Time In Narcissia

Cinderella wants to marry a Prince. And since she's the prettiest, nicest, coolest girl in the kingdom, it shouldn't be a problem, right? So far so standard.

But Once Upon a Time in Narcissia tells the story of Cinderella as you've never heard it before. The Prince is gay, the King is mad and the ugly step-sisters

are not so much wicked as, well, ugly. In a world where beauty reigns supreme can Cinderella still get her Prince with relatives this embarrassing? [Back to schedule]

Over The Threshold

Opposites attract - but then they're stuck with each other. When a relationship goes stale can a little cheating bring back the spark?

Infidelity might drive a couple apart....but then so might monogamy! Over The Threshold is an hour-long contemporary musical

written by Christopher Hamilton which deals with four characters whose lives are turned upside down in one fateful evening. [Back to schedule]

Pick of Edinburgh Musicals

As the 60th Edinburgh Festival gives us another host of exciting new musicals, one piece will be chosen to present a 30-40 minute excerpt of their new show.

Not only that….it starts the whole event rolling! Details of the chosen show will be available from the beginning of September. [Back to schedule]

Speed Dating – The Revue

Speed Dating is a firmly tongue in cheek musical revue written by Jamie Ledwith, that introduces the audience to the joys of Speed Dating – warts and all.

With two female West-End performers playing over a dozen characters, (including bouncers!), this one-hour show includes musical pastiche at its best

with hilarious comic results. Starring Leanne Rogers (Mamma Mia, Sunset Boulevard, Oliver) & Louise Raven (Mamma Mia). [Back to schedule]

The Price of Fame

Set in New York and Los Angeles in 1975 at the height of the UK rock invasion by bands like The Who and Led Zeppelin, The Price of Fame is the love

story of classical pianist Katherine Waterson and rock singer Joel Scott. They pay a heavy price for their fame but grow ever closer as they fight to rediscover

who they really are. Directed by Laura Baggaley. [Back to schedule]

The End In Mind

Three lives intertwine and become hinged on the notion of finding satisfaction and happiness from the love born out of friendship.  Each in turn is looking for a

cure and is trying to bargain their way into a life more fulfilling than the one they currently lead. This chamber musical is their story: one of struggle, one of passion,

and one that begins at the end. Staged around a grand piano and told through song we are taken on a journey through the interconnected lives of three friends

who ask us to consider the boundaries of trust, friendship and integrity. [Back to schedule]

This Is Our Youth Centre

Vince and Nicky have a problem. The authorities want to shut down their hoppin' Local Youth Centre, and re-open it as a facility for kids. This can't happen.

Crazy ol' London Town needs cool cats like Vince and Nicky, and they need a joint like this. They have to save the Centre, and fast... One thing's for sure.

They aren't going down without a fight. Inspired by the technicolour mayhem of sixties rock 'n roll movies, and with music influences from Stevie Wonder to Kander and Ebb, This Is Our Youth Centre is a coming of age story about two dudes who are old enough to know better. But don't. [Back to schedule]

Toys

"Toys" is a brand new family musical which takes its inspiration from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker."  In a modern day setting, it tells the story of Victoria, a fifteen year old orphan, who, disillusioned by real life and her experience of it, disappears into a dream world of living toys - which unbeknownst to her hold the key to her survival of her adult.
